WHS Boys Hockey Tournament Changes Name to Honor Walter Songin

This year's tournament will see Walpole take on Acton/Boxborough and then Natick will play Coyle & Cassidy.

The following was provided by WHS Boys Hockey Booster President John Carde.

On December 26 and 28 at Iorio Arena in Walpole the Walpole High School Boys Hockey and the community of Walpole will be honoring the late Walter H. Songin, as they rename their annual hockey tournament the Walter H. Songin - Winter Classic.

Walter “Cuey” Songin lived and loved the game of hockey. He was a leader, a teacher and a hero of the game and made a huge impact in the Town of Walpole and around the country. As an ambassador of the game, the Walpole High School Boys Hockey wants to make sure his legacy will never be forgotten.

As one reporter wrote, “Wally was perhaps, one of the fiercest competitors he’d ever seen.” Wally played hockey the way hockey should be played, he played to win, he played tough and he never gave up. If you know anything about hockey, you know Wally lived it and it was in his blood. These are all qualities that the high school team strives to achieve every time they touch the ice.

To honor Wally for his dedication, passion and his accomplishments dating back to his Walpole HS career in 1940’s to the retirement of his jersey with the Boston Bruins Alumni in 2005. It is only fitting that the annual Winter Classic now be named the “Walter H. Songin – Winter Classic”.

Come out and enjoy some local hockey action, while honoring Walter H. Songin and supporting the Walpole High School Boys Hockey program at the same time. For more information please visit the Walpole Rebel Hockey website www.walpolerebelhockey.com. All proceeds from the tournament will be used to help the Walpole High School Boys Hockey program and help maintain the winning tradition that Wally started in the 1940’s.
