Walpole Schools Ranked No. 61 out of 147 on Boston Magazine's "Best Schools"

Walpole Public Schools ranked No. 61 this year, down from No. 48 last year.

In its annual "Best Schools" edition released this week, Boston Magazine ranked Walpole Public Schools as No. 61 among the 147 districts listed.

Walpole was ranked No. 61 based on class size average, per-pupil spending, graduation rate, and other factors. Last year, Walpole was among the Top 50 at No. 48. It is not clear from the story if the criteria changed, but other surrounding town dropped in ranking as well: Nearby Medfield dropped from No. 18 last year to No. 37 this year; and Westwood dropped from No. 13 to No. 21.

According to the magazine's analysis, 94.8 percent of Walpole students graduate from high school with 87.9 percent going on to college. The town's per pupil spending amount of $11,692 was on the lower side.

Boston Magazine representatives say they spent months compiling data released by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which included information on schools in 147 communities. The schools in the municipalities were ranked in 20 different categories, including average class size, student-to-teacher ratio, rates of college acceptance, as well as SAT and MCAS test scores.
