Boyden Elementary School Student Diagnosed with Whooping Cough

The schools superintendent said the infection has not spread to other students.

A Boyden Elementary School student was diagnosed with Pertussis, the schools superintendent announced Wednesday.

"There have been no other confirmed cases ... and it is believed that no others students have been exposed," Superintendent Lincoln Lynch wrote in a letter to parents. "We have been informed ... that we are past the point of contagion for other students and staff."

Pertussis is also called Whooping Cough. The respiratory infection is characterized by severe coughing spells that can induce a whooping sound when the victim breathes in. There's a vaccine, and it's treatable with medication. Whooping Cough is rarely fatal.
