Walpole Small Business Q&A: The Good Food Store and Deli

With their mile high sandwiches the Good Food Store and Deli on High Plain Street aims to satisfy even the hungriest of appetites.

Walpole Patch spoke with owner Alan Donaruma to find out more about the sandwich shop.

Walpole Patch: How long have you been in business?

Alan Donaruma: We have been here for 20 years. People seem to be very surprised when I tell them that. My dad George opened the store after many successful years in the international food business.

WP: Had you always been a deli?

AD: When we first opened the main products in the beginning were specialty food items and fresh produce. Over the years he expanded the line of products with gourmet coffee and breakfast items and eventually introducing a full service deli. The deli took off and became the main attraction highlighted by fresh Italian braided sandwich rolls from the north end of Boston and high quality Boar's Head deli products.

WP: So what's the most popular sandwich?

AD: The turkey club is our most popular sandwich but there are a number of hot chicken cutlet sandwiches that are becoming more and more popular including the "Black Jack" (chicken cutlet with bacon and pepper jack cheese topped with lettuce tomato and a chipotle mayo). When it comes down to it all of the sandwiches are of the highest of quality which might explain the difficulty and long time that it takes even our regular customers to make a decision! Don't worry about feeling rushed to place your order either.

WP: What is your secret for being so popular?

AD: The employee staff is the secret to maintaing this business at the highest level of customer service. Everybody works hard and does their best to make the customer comfortable. Speed, quality and delivery with a smile is routine for us. I work here every day so I see it first hand.
