UPDATED: Downed Tree Causes Power Outages in Walpole

According to Walpole fire officials, the wires were arching and smoking when they arrived.

Update (9:36 p.m.)- According to Walpole PD, power has been restored.

Update (8:29 p.m.)- Just talked to Walpole PD who said that crews are still working to restore power to the area and there is no timetable at the moment for when power will be back. 

Update (5:57 p.m.)- According to NSTAR spokesman Barry Salvucci, about 700 people have been impacted by power outages in town. Power is expected to be turned back on around 6:45-7 p.m. tonight.

A tree that fell on top of live wires at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Stone Street is causing power outages througout the area.

The tree, which fell around 4 p.m., was hanging across most of Stone Street and was being held up by live power lines.

According to fire officials on-scene, the wires were arching and smoking. The cause of the tree falling is believed to be due to wind, also the tree was rotting on the inside.

Walpole police, fire and NSTAR officials responded to the scene.

Several wires were dangling from the telephone poles touching onto the ground.

According to an NSTAR official on-scene two circuits have been affected.

Per the NSTAR official on-scene: "There is going to be a lot of power outages."

According to a Walpole Police dispatcher, "Pretty much half the town" is without power and they are unsure at the moment when power will be restored.
